Outlook of Coal Import in India

India is the largest importer of Thermal Coal in the world with 190.5 MMT total imported coal in FY17 and this is expected to grow due to increased demand for power. Increasing coal imports are set to drive coal cargo traffic upwards at both major and non-major ports. Coal cargo traffic has grown at a CAGR of 15.5 per cent over FY07– 18 to reach 305 MMT. Share of Coal in the total Cargo Profile was 21.3% in FY18.

Ports in India

⦁ There are 12 major ports in the country; six on the Eastern coast and six on the Western coast. Major ports are under the jurisdiction of the Government of India and are governed by the Major Port Trusts Act 1963, except Ennore port, which is administered under the Companies Act 1956.

⦁ India has about 200 non-major ports of which one-third are operational. Non-major ports come under the jurisdiction of the respective state Governments’ Maritime Boards (GMB).

Private Ports in India

There has been a major surge in Private investments in Ports because of Government of India’s De-licensing by allowing FDI of up to 100 percent under the automatic route and a 10-year tax holiday. To make major ports more investor friendly a revised Model Concession Agreement (MCA) was approved in 2018. All these efforts have led to an unprecedented investment of US$ 3.9 Billion and the capacity development 264.77 Million Tons Per Annum (MTPA) under implementation.
